Thanks for tuning into this episode of the smARTcast, next up we welcome the internationally celebrated and New-York based opera singer J’Nai Bridges . The mezzo soprano has been described variously as “the Beyonce of opera”, with a soft and soulful voice.
This October, J’Nai will be making her debut with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, singing the titular role in one of the most popular operas, Carmen.
Find out more about the Canadian Opera Company’s Carmen – and the rest of their 2022/23 season – at coc.ca, and keep up with J’Nai on Instagram @jnaibmezzo. She joins us now to talk about her relationship with this opera and its stellar cast, the Canadian operatic community, and the ongoing struggle for black singers trying to establish their place in opera.
